This Sunday, before the United Nations, a delegation of the world’s leading scientists delivered a sobering and stark dose of reality to all of humankind: it’s “becoming inevitable” that countries will miss the ambitious target they set eight years ago for limiting the warming of the Earth.

“The ominous estimate points to the growing likelihood that global warming will shoot past 1.5 degrees Celsius before the end of this century, inflicting what scientists describe as an overwhelming toll from intensifying storms, drought and heat on people and the economy,” as Chelsea Harvey reported for the New York Times. “It also injects an urgent message into global climate talks in Dubai, where the debate over ramping down fossil fuels is set to flare over the next two weeks.”

The risk of surpassing the temperature threshold of 1.5 to 2.0 degrees Celsius, the goal set in 2015 during the Paris climate summit, would strike a heavy blow to the international target and rallying point for countless nations across the globe. 

“The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the world’s top authority on climate science, says global emissions must fall by a whopping 42 percent within the next six years to keep the target alive,” Harvey wrote. “And they must spiral down to net zero by midcentury.”

Despite a push toward renewable energy and efforts to clamp down on pollution, greenhouse gas emissions continue to soar, with China, the United States, and India most at fault.

  • Data from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and the World Research Institute (WRI) have produced similar figures, with some estimates predicting an increase in over 40 million new jobs. 
  • Two of the occupations that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects to have the fastest employment growth from 2020 to 2030 are wind turbine service technicians (68-percent increase) and solar photovoltaic installers (52-percent increase).

“About 45% of companies are adopting a "skills first" approach, a strategy that helps reduce bias, and 33% are replacing resumes as a top gauge with other skills-based assessments,” Collins explained.
